Reporting & Writing
Check out my articles from my first year of writing at Scot Scoop!
Feature: The death dilemma
This feature story explores the ethics behind physician-assisted death and its implications within the medical world. With varying sources, from doctors involved in palliative care to rabbis and priests, this article gives insight from all kinds of perspectives. This was my first time writing a feature story, and I found it challenging and exciting. While there was pressure to craft an interesting story, I could use my journalistic voice to discuss topics that matter to me. I explored an entire world of controversy and stigma, then put it into words and communicated it to others. For this reason, the story influenced my journey as a journalist, allowing me to spread important information and make a genuine impact with my writing.
News Coverage
Customers grapple with PG&E's rising rates
As a news writer, I observed the world around me. One of the most prominent changes I noticed was with gas prices. From the lit signs I would pass on car rides home to my parents' dialogue about the insane rates, they constantly appeared in my life. Because of this, I wrote about PG&E's new rates going into 2024, diving into the social and economic impacts of the new policy. I got the opportunity to speak to activists involved in the topic and broadened my understanding of the issue as a whole.
AI transforms the modern workplace
Again, with this topic, I took inspiration from those around me. Within many workplaces, companies started to integrate new technologies involving artificial intelligence (AI), creating different dynamics from the workplace we might've envisioned 30 years ago. For this article, I got to explore a completely different realm of news with technology and business, allowing me to gain more information on advancements in this world.
College enrollment rates decline as higher education loses value
For this story, I was intrigued because of its relevance to me and other viewers of Scot Scoop as high schoolers. Within the competitive Bay Area environment, all I had ever dreamed of was going to a good college. But when I heard the news of enrollment rates declining, specifically in the CSU system, I was shocked. This led me to investigate the story, allowing me to look at these statistics from an educated point of view. I was able to get diverse perspectives on the matter and understand the changing landscape of higher education.
Sports Coverage
Scots stay undefeated on senior night
For my first sports and Scot Scoop story, I covered the last Carlmont girls varsity flag football game. As a new journalist and sports writer, this experience challenged me because of the time constraint. I collected information and interviews on a tight schedule, testing my planning and time management skills. Additionally, there was a significant lack of coverage for the undefeated team, so I felt a responsibility as a journalist to provide more information on their journey.
Coach Profile: Oscar Fabic leads the Scots to victory
After the flag football season was over, I continued to be interested in the team's story. For Carlmont's first ever girls varsity flag football season, they remained undefeated. So I took a deeper look into their story, and created a profile for their coach, Oscar Fabic. He shared various insights into the organization and planning that led to the team's success, creating an even more interesting backstory.
Scots bounce back against Buccaneers
As the winter sports season continued at Carlmont, I found myself wanting to step outside of my comfort zone. For this reason, I decided to. cover basketball, a sport I had little knowledge in. Leading up to the game, I found myself better prepared in terms of scheduling and planning, however I lacked some context for the sport itself. To remedy this, I talked to those around me and learned everything I could about the sport. This helped me prepare and allowed me to craft a story around the game.
